Westminster Chapter In Westminster Memorial Day Parade
On a sunny, hot and humid Memorial Day members of the Westminster Chapter, Maryland
State Society, Sons of the American Revolution marched under their chapter banner
in the annual Memorial Day Parade in Westminster, Maryland. The parade is considered
the oldest continuously held Memorial Day Parade in the country. The first parade
and service were celebrated on 30 May 1868 when Mary Bostwick Shellman gathered
school children to march through Westminster to the town cemetery, in response
to Gen. John A. Logan's 5 May 1868 General Order No. 11 to adorn graves of Union
soldiers with a flower. From that year to the present, the while the parades have
sometimes been cancelled due to rain, the wreath-lay ceremonies have occured annually,
save for two years during World War II. At the service following each year's parade,
a wreath from the chapter is laid in Westminster Cemetery. The chapter, organized
in March 1985, has particpated annually since 2001.
